CNN has an article on . It talks specfically about SuSE 6.4, the only PowerPC distro at Linuxworld SJ. SuSE 6.4, according to the article, comes with Mac-on-Linux, allowing you to run Linux programs, on top of Mac OS, a choice of GNOME or KDE, and more. As always, it's great to see PowerPC Linux coverage in CNN.com.

Macworld Magazine this month has a of SuSE Linux 6.4 for the PowerPC. It proclaims SuSE to be the best Linux distro for the PowerMac, with an excellent graphical installer, a good manual, and 4 CDs of software. It's cons are it's manual is sloppy, and it's updates lag behind the x86 ones.

There is a German report on the release of SuSE Linux 7.0 for PPC on . SuSE's PPC page is (again in German - nothing on the English SuSE site yet). I recently did an install of SuSE 7.0 for Intel for a review, and it's a massive distribution. Most any piece of software you would want is on the CD's.

SuSE 7.1 for the PowerPC is an extremely well put together distribution. In our opinion, it will be hard for the upcoming release of YDL to beat it. We will be pitting the new releases from all the major vendors against each other shortly. We have discovered several problems with SuSE 7.1.

I describe how I installed SuSE 7.1 PPC on my iMac. I had neither installed nor used Linux before, though I have used other versions of Unix in the past. I'm not a Mac expert, either; although I've used them as home machines for many years, I've mostly been working on Windows recently.

Macworld has , for the September edition of Macworld. Recieving 3 1/2 mice, Ulyssis Bravo was impressed by user friendly configuration tools, and the thousands of packages you could install (for a total of about 6 GB). One critcism he had for SuSE 7.1, was many of packages where outdated, it standardized on XFree86 3.36, and it's version of MOL could only run Mac OS 9.

When SuSE released version 7.2 of their distribution for PC, many had expected a 7.2 release for PPC to follow short, yet it never came. The first question to pop up was: "Will they continue their support for a PPC distribution?". Well, now that SuSE 7.3 has been released, we know for sure and I have to admit, it was worth waiting.

I have added a on how to install SuSE Linux 7.3 on an iBook to the "" page. It covers partitioning the harddrive, the install options, using the yaboot boot loader and how to fix various small problems such as using the internal modem or the internal Ethernet card.

If you want to contribute a Linux install guide or other useful content, don't hesitate to submit it!

First RPM packages of XFree 4.2 are available for SuSE 7.3 PPC on their FTP server.

The packages installed fine on my system, however be aware that XFree 4.2 DRI does not work on PPC yet, as DRI support in the PPC kernel needs updates.
