iMacLinux is, at some point, planning to build a Linux distribution for the iMacLinux community. SO what do you, the *MacLinux-er, want? Apt? RPM? Graphical Startup? Cool graphical apps? Or just a console? Tell us what you like.

First thing first! I would like to say that the site looks great and loads much faster than the old site hosted by yellowdoglinux.com!

I'm interested in burning a bootable Linux CD. Do Macs support El Torito? Would I have to create a HFS filesystem and include BootX? Is it even possible? Has anyone done it?

I have Vicomsoft Internet Gateway set up on my old, trusty 7200. Now, using AppleTalk (I have a perfoma 5400, with LinuxPPC) I want to get on to the Internet (through Internet Gateway). Has anyone done this? I'm finding this rather hard, and linux without Internet isn't much, is it... do either email me or post the answer.. thanks A LOT. =) cya, Dylan

I've tried some of the PPC Linux distros, and have thus far been rather unsatisfied, as they all seem to have crazy config tools that set things up to run nicely at first, but then when I head to the config files I get all sorts of weird stuff. So far I've been able to get away with just writing my own config files over top of the ones created by the distro, but then I always have to be careful not to let those tools run again and hope that something else isn't dependent on that config file being like it was. What I want is something like Slackware, but for PPC. Maybe the Slackware folks would like to start a port?

Does anyone here have experience building computers with PPCs from scratch? Are there any Web sites around about this? Any important documentation that I should consider?

I'm quite happy owner of a fresh new silent iMac DV+ with usb problems in installing YDL 1.2. I've found some suggestions in this and other forums to this mishap, but I cant connect to site ppclinux.apple.com (eg. http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh ) to get benh's kernels, that are a key ingredient to most of these solutions.

It would seem that Linux on Mac platform has been maturing rapidly, but what issues still remain in day to day use in running Linux on a Mac versus on the x86/intel platform?
Do most folks keep OS X and/or OS 9 around because of things they can't yet do in Linux?
What about lack of software options? When you get or add software is it really as easy as grabbing source code and compiling for Mac?
It's time to move up from my old Pentium II 266, do I get that Mac G4 Cube I want or not?

Here's something I'd like to do on my first generation iMac, and I'm wondering how much of this is realistic and possible...

We are happy to announce the availability of our new . They are to replace the Questions and Answers section we had on the old sites.
You may still find them a bit empty at the moment, but don't hesitate to post to them. Several of our staff members are in the forums on a daily basis and will try to help you with your Linux related problems.
Furthermore, the forums are also a great place to share your own user experience with others, give tips, help new users, in short contribute to the community.

"Many "gurus" teaching new users about Linux make it look harder than it needs to be, and apparently fail to explain that yes, you can make PowerPoint-style presentations in Linux, you can view Web Pages that use Flash animation and other "glitz" features, and that you can manage all your files though simple "point, click, drag and drop" visual interfaces. Could the biggest problem with Linux usability be that most of the people teaching newbies to use Linux are too smart and know too much?"
Very interesting , if you are a new user and share the author's feeling, let us know by posting a comment here :)

While in the effort of fixing your computer, especially when with linux, it's often a great help to have a person you can talk to directly and in real time. The easiest way to achieve this on the Internet is to use some chat facilities like IRC. O'Reilly OnLamp has an about using IRC to get help with OpenSource Software. While the article focuses on FreeBSD, the idea stays the same. Read on for suggestions to get help on PPC Linux...
