I'm interested in burning a bootable Linux CD. Do Macs support El Torito? Would I have to create a HFS filesystem and include BootX? Is it even possible? Has anyone done it?

I have Vicomsoft Internet Gateway set up on my old, trusty 7200. Now, using AppleTalk (I have a perfoma 5400, with LinuxPPC) I want to get on to the Internet (through Internet Gateway). I've tried some of the PPC Linux distros, and have thus far been rather unsatisfied, as they all seem to have crazy config tools that set things up to run nicely at first, but then when I head to the config files I get all sorts of weird stuff. So far I've been able to get away with just writing my own config files over top of the ones created by the distro, but then I always have to be careful not to let those tools run again and hope that something else isn't dependent on that config file being like it was. What I want is something like Slackware, but for PPC. Maybe the Slackware folks would like to start a port?

Hi, if I have an ibook with MOL, mac os9 & yellowdog, and then a have a pc desktop with dualboot windows & redhat! Can I use files and programs/software beetween these two linux systems? Without trouble and problems? I am asking because I like to try apple (ibook) but not many people I know have apple! Icelandic boy in denmark :) thanks!

Does anyone here have experience building computers with PPCs from scratch? Are there any Web sites around about this? Any important documentation that I should consider?

I'm quite happy owner of a fresh new silent iMac DV+ with usb problems in installing YDL 1.2. I've found some suggestions in this and other forums to this mishap, but I cant connect to site ppclinux.apple.com (eg. http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh ) to get benh's kernels, that are a key ingredient to most of these solutions.

It would seem that Linux on Mac platform has been maturing rapidly, but what issues still remain in day to day use in running Linux on a Mac versus on the x86/intel platform?
Do most folks keep OS X and/or OS 9 around because of things they can't yet do in Linux?
What about lack of software options? When you get or add software is it really as easy as grabbing source code and compiling for Mac?
