I just tried installing YDL 2.0 on my PowerMac 4400@200MHz with 64MB RAM and an Apple Multiple Scan 15 monitor (the old ugly ones). It used to work fine with CS-1.2.1 but YDL 2.0 messes up, even at the installation. It's fine for about half a second and then it switches to an unsupported resolution. I tried putting atyfb:vmode:17:cmode:16 as Kernel arguments in BootX and enabling Force Video Settings but that didn't help. If anyone knows how to get this thing to work, please tell me! Thanks, Evin

Attempting to install Yellowdog 2.0 on a beige box G3/300 with a Studio 17 (blue and white) monitor. Have followed the instructions (partitioning to the T), install Os 9 and then re-boot, opens up Boox X window, choose linux and then the jaggered screen appears (according to the Engineers notes, this is normal). The jaggered screen then just hangs. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

This is a general question. I am a college student and I would like to know if you can install red hat linux on an ibook running OS X. I really need this information quickly, so please help me out. I'm taking a C++ programming class this semester and I would like to know how to install Red hat linux on an ibook. Where could I get a good Mac C++ compiler?

I've got a problem in that I need to run Matlab 6.1 on a G4 Yosemite Tower. Mathworks stopped developing Matlab for mac a year back or so(v 5.2), and is now only offering the new version for Linux and Windows.

I just recently purchased the new ibook and immediately bought suse 7.1 to go with it. However, when I try installing Linux, I seem to be faced with 2 screens. My LCD is stuck on 1024x768 while the installer (Linux and Xserver) are using 800x600 causing a duplicate screen to appear on the bottom. I already tried the following boot option "video=aty128fb:vmode:14", but that didn't seem to work. Has anyone gotten around this problem. Thanks, NewBie ppcLinux User

After "Installing" Yellow Dog Linux on my Dual USB iBook, choosing the Graphical Login Option at setup, I cannot Login. Using the correct Username and Password fails to work. Attempting to re-install Linux from CD is also impossible since it "sees" it is already installed. Do I have to reformat to move forward?

I just bought the new white iBook last week and put SUSE 7.1 on it. I tried getting on the net with kppp and wvdial, and neither of them seem to be able to initialize the modem. Also, when I hit the query modem button on kppp setup, It goes through, but all that is returned is blank spaces for all the ATI fields... I'd like some help from someone that has gotten theirs working, thank you. I also cannot get sound but thats not incredibly important at the moment.

This question is not specifically related to Linux, but it might interest some of you out there.

I recently got my iBook and as most of you probably know, they are powered by Li-Ion batteries.

Now the great advantage of Li-Ion batteries are higher capacities and the complete lack of memory effect (No more need for Apple's battery recondition utility). Furthermore, Li-Ion batteries lose less charge when not used over a certain period of time.

However, I wonder about 2 points:
1) Doesn't it have a negative effect on the battery's lifetime when i keep the iBook hooked to main power for a long time (several days or even weeks?) (assuming i do so with battery inserted)

2) I have a switch on my main power plug, which allows me to disable main power for all expensive electronic devices. (During storms or heavy lightning for instance)
Now this usually means no power supplied to the battery for let's say 1-2 hours. During that time (when not used) it will discharge only very little. When power is back up, MacOS however seems to repower the battery for a few minutes before switching to main power supply.
Now my question is, if that short repowering is done often (for instance if I'd turn of the switch everytime I leave the house for maximum saftey), would that have an impact (a serious one?) on the battery's lifetime?

I hope someone out there knows the answer :P
